SIGNS OF DIABETES IN DOGS
Dog diabetes is a chronic illness. It has to be treated at its earliest so the disease
can be reversed. The owners of dogs must be aware of this disease. Signs of diabetes if left untreated will
either cripple the dog or eventually cause its death. Following warning signs of diabetes must be looked
for
Lethargy
Lethargy or tiredness is the symptom of many dog illnesses which includes diabetes as
well. This is the reason that it is important to watch the health condition of dog. Sometimes lethargy or the
laziness of your dog can signify serious health condition. If at any stage your pet is not responding well,
then you must assume that it is sick. It is better to visit the pet for proper diagnosis.
Excessive Consumption of Water
If your dog is drinking excess water then there are bright chances that it is
suffering from diabetes. Diabetes compels the dog to drink more water because of the excessive production of
glucose. If this is the case then the doctor may prescribe certain medication to reverse the
condition.
Excessive Urination
If dog is drinking excessive water then he will certainly urinate often. These two
conditions are connected to each other. Again it is better to talk to your veterinarian if your pet is
urinating more often.
Sudden Weight
Gain or Weight Loss
The lack of activity because of tiredness may cause the dog to gain more weight. The
diabetic dog is unable to metabolize the sugars properly because of insufficiency of insulin. Abnormal weight
gain or loss should be a major concern whether it is caused by diabetes.
The trickiest thing about dog diabetes is that at one point the dog may or may not
have any signs of diabetes. In few dogs, diabetes creeps up slowly and starts to destruct the body organs
without giving any sign of diabetes at all. This is the reason that dog owners are specifically advised to
take their pet to veterinarian doctor for complete check up regularly.
Important here is to make sure that diabetes if detected at early stage is easy to be
treated. The dog owners must know that
“Sad dogs are sick dogs”.
