Signs of Diabetes in Infants

The signs of diabetes in infants are different for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Infants suffering from diabetes have to suffer from low blood sugar; no matter how much attention is being given to them by their parents or caretakers. The careful management of meals and insulin helps to reduce these incidences

Signs of diabetes in infants (hypoglycemia) includes

  • A specific cry that can be recognized
  • Crankiness
  • Paleness
  • Sweating
  • Clumsiness
  • Bluish lips and fingers
  • Trembling

If these signs of diabetes in infants are seen it is recommended that parents should go for a blood glucose test. If the diabetic testing supplies are not available then the caretaker of the infant should take the necessary precaution; assuming that infant is hypoglycemic. The proper supply of glucose is required for the development of brain so it is vital the infant should not suffer these signs of diabetes for a prolonged period of time.

The good thing is the body of infant is small enough so it can be easily treated. For instance few ounces of apple juice are enough to bring the blood sugar level to normal. In extreme case glycogen may be required.

Occasionally the level of glucose may shoot up in infants. This is termed hyperglycemia. The typical signs of diabetes in infants (hyperglycemia) include:

  • Polydipsia
  • Polyuria
  • Tiredness

The parents or caretaker of the infant should immediately consul doctor to control the signs of diabetes.
