A temporary phase of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy is termed gestational diabetes. It is good to be aware of warning signs of diabetes during pregnancy. If the symptoms are seen, the medical advice should be taken immediately.

Any pregnant women can be at the risk of developing diabetes. A rough estimate says that one woman out of every 25 has to suffer from gestational diabetes. Normally the diabetes shows its symptoms in the third month of pregnancy, but sometimes it can be before or after this time. A woman however is at more risk of developing gestational diabetes if she is overweight or is over the age of 30 years.

The pregnancy hormones change the chemistry of the body. These hormones cause problem in converting sugar into energy. The specific hormones that are thought to cause the problem are released from placenta.

  • The most common warning signs of diabetes that are linked with gestational diabetes are extreme thirst and hunger.
  • A growling stomach is not something unusual for the pregnant women; still if the extreme can be the warning sign of diabetes.
  • An increase in output of urine is also linked with increased intake of liquids. Again excessive urination is normal in pregnancy but extreme cases should not be taken lightly as it signals gestational diabetes.
