SIGNS OF HYPERGLYCEMIA
Hyperglycemia, as the name suggests, is opposite of Hypoglycemia. It is a clinical condition which
occurs when the amount of glucose that circulates in our body with blood exceeds than the required
level.
The excessive amount of glucose in the blood of the person is the first warning signs of Diabetes
Mellitus. The high blood sugar level can be controlled with the help of medications or insulin injections but
if left untreated can even prove to be fatal. The complex medical condition can arise because of
hyperglycemia. In type 1 diabetes it may result in Diabetes Ketoacidosis whereas in type 2 diabetics it can
cause Hyperosmolar coma.
The high blood sugar level or Hyperglycemia may result if
· A person eats more food than recommended
· A person takes less insulin or medicine as prescribed
· A person is suffering from some illness or infection
· A person is going through some emotional stress
The warning signs of hyperglycemia are excessive thirst, frequent urination and blurry
vision.
The treatment of high blood sugar depends on the cause behind it and the glucose level at that
particular time. If person has a feeling of unconsciousness then hospitalization becomes necessary. Even the
lighter cases of hyperglycemia must be taken seriously to avoid the damage to other body organs.
The statistical data has revealed that there are around 20 million people who are suffering from
diabetes. More surprising is that around 30 % of this 20 million people are unaware of their medical
condition.
